Annual Arbor and Earth Day celebration invites children to celebrate wildlife in Piedmont Parks

Kids will have a chance to climb up in Public Works’ big trucks, complete a tree-themed art project, and maybe win a new book to take home at Piedmont’s annual Arbor and Earth Day celebration, hosted by Piedmont Public Works and the Piedmont Park Commission:
Arbor and Earth Day Celebration 2025
Thursday, April 24, 4-6pm
Piedmont Community Hall, 711 Highland Avenue
The annual event, which dates back to 2007, celebrates the nearly 9,000 trees the Public Works Department maintains in Piedmont’s parks and public spaces – as well as the City’s commitment to environmental stewardship.
This year’s event will feature:
-
Public Works big trucks: See the equipment Public Works staff uses daily in their work to keep Piedmont’s trees and public spaces healthy and beautiful. Children will be able to climb up and sit in the cab of the trucks.
-
Arts & crafts: Park Commissioners will be on hand to assist little ones with their creations.
-
Owl naming contest: A photo exhibit and naming contest will highlight raptors living in Piedmont Parks, including a nesting pair of great horned owls that have taken up residence in Dracena Park. Community members can share name suggestions online in advance at piedmont.ca.gov/DracenaOwls.
-
Raffle: Kids can enter to win a Lego set or children’s book related to Arbor and Earth Day themes. New this year, a raffle for adult attendees will offer an opportunity to take home a California native plant for your garden.
-
Electric leaf blower demos: Gas powered leaf blowers are not allowed in Piedmont, but clean, quiet electric alternatives can get the job done. Try one for yourself at the event.
The event will also include informational tables from the Piedmont Fire Department and the City’s Sustainability Division.
Heritage Trees to be announced at event
The Arbor Day celebration will also feature the announcement of the 2025 class of Piedmont Heritage Trees. Nominators of selected trees will be recognized at the event and receive a Piedmont Heritage Tree lapel pin.
The Heritage Tree program, now in its seventh year, aims to raise awareness of and appreciation for Piedmont’s diverse urban forest. Heritage Trees are nominated by community members and selected by the Park Commission. This year, the City received nine nominations for Heritage Trees.
