Apply for and renew business licenses online
Published May 20, 2025
Business owners can now apply for, renew, and pay annual tax for their City of Piedmont business license entirely online. The new tool replaces a cumbersome paper-based process, providing community members a faster, simpler way to manage business licensing and rental taxes.
You no longer need to download forms, write checks, or visit City Hall in person. Through the new online portal, business owners can:
- Apply for a new business license
- Pay their annual business license tax, including rental business tax
- Close their City of Piedmont business or rental account
- Update contact information and business details
All actions and payment history are stored in one place, accessible 24/7 from any device.
Community members who need assistance using the online system can get help by calling a dedicated support number at (510) 250-1975 or by visiting City Hall, where staff can assist business owners with completing the process using the public online service kiosks located in the lobby.
Licenses required for all businesses operating in Piedmont
All businesses operating in Piedmont – including rental property owners – must have a valid business license. This includes, but is not limited to:
- Home-based businesses (includes 1099 self-employment)
- Online storefronts or “influencers” with a Piedmont business address
- Landlords operating long-term or short-term rentals
- Contractors and consultants working in Piedmont, even if located elsewhere
Businesses that fail to obtain a license are subject to late fees and penalties. Learn more about licensing requirements and compliance at piedmont.ca.gov/BusinessCompliance.
Part of a broader effort to modernize services
The launch of online business licensing continues Piedmont’s work to make City business more accessible and user-friendly. This system joins the NextRequest public records portal, Piedmont Police CitizenConnect online incident map, and eTRAKiT online building and planning permit portal in a growing collection of digital services. Building on these efforts, a new City website is currently in development and scheduled to launch later this year.
