2025 class of Heritage Trees to be named at April 24 Arbor & Earth Day celebration

Up to 5 new trees in Piedmont’s parks and public spaces will join the 30 existing “Piedmont Heritage Trees” on Thursday. Selected by the Park Commission, the newly designated Heritage Trees will be announced at the City’s annual Arbor and Earth Day Celebration on Thursday, April 24th from 4-6pm at Community Hall.
The City’s Heritage Tree program, now in its eighth year, aims to raise awareness of and appreciation for Piedmont’s diverse urban forest.
9 nominations for the 2025 class of Heritage Trees
12 community members submitted nominations for this year’s Heritage Tree program, for a total of 9 trees under consideration. The City extends sincere thanks to everyone who participated:
- Cameron Wolfe, Jr. & Karen Sullivan: Island Oak (Quercus tomentella) in Mountain/Bellevue traffic circle
- Tom Ramsey: Oak tree at Community Pool construction site
- Dick Carter for Walking on Wednesdays: Southern magnolias along Artuna Avenue in lower Dracena Park
- Jack and Sharona Fischrup: California buckeye in Dracena Park
- Shari Fujii: Plum trees lining Huntleigh and Lexford Roads
- Lisa Stockwell Gardner and David Hitchcock: Crepe myrtle in front of 1053 Harvard Road
- Justin Zucker: Cherry trees on Lake Avenue in front of Beach Elementary School
- Mary Louise Morrison: Redwood trees behind the bleachers at Coaches Field
- Anonymous, in honor of the Piedmont Beautification Foundation: Flowering chestnuts along Highland Avenue (an early PBF project)
Each year, the Park Commission names up to 5 trees “Piedmont Heritage Trees.” Nominators of selected trees will be recognized at the Arbor & Earth Day celebration and receive a Piedmont Heritage Tree lapel pin. Nominators will also be named on future signage marking heritage trees.
