COVID19- Response and Procedures

In accordance with the Alameda County Health Officer’s April 29, 2020 order for all residents to slow the spread of novel coronavirus (COVID-19), the City of Piedmont has made a series of determinations related to construction that is consistent with the County’s Order.

Continued Services: Consistent with these findings, the Planning & Building Department will continue to perform priority services as outlined in the service matrix below. You may still submit applications, provide plans, and ask questions via e-mail and phone. Please note that our Planning & Building counter is currently closed to the public, as is City Hall and other municipal facilities.

Inspections: The Planning & Building Department will be conducting inspections for the projects allowed under the April 29, 2020 Shelter in Place Order. Please refer to the services below for Building Inspections. All services shall be provided in compliance with social distancing requirements.

Construction: In accordance with the April 29th, 2020 Order, construction may proceed. Please note that all construction activity in the city is required to follow safe construction practices as outlined in Appendix B-1 and B-2 of the April 29th order. In accordance with the Small Construction  Project Safety Protocols (Appendix B-1) submit the COVID-19 Construction Safety Supervisor Designee form to the Building Department the name and contact information of the COVID-19 Supervisor for each job site. No inspections will be schedule without this information file with the Building Department. 

Please be aware that during these extraordinary times neighbors are sheltering in place. Be extra sensitive to noise (particularly early morning noise), dust, dirt, parking and other quality of life issues related to your construction project and the surrounding neighborhood.

Please note that city staff is working remotely and are still answering phones and emails.

Building Inspections

Building Inspections:  To help to keep our community safe, building inspections will be performed to follow strict Social Distancing and other COVID-19 protocols. 

Some inspections may be conducted via video chat or other virtual means. As we develop and implement the new procedures, there will be a limited number of inspections per day. Prior to the inspection you will be contacted to work out the particulars for your inspection.

 Permit Issuance

The Building Department will contact applicants when the permit is ready to be issued. At that time, arrangements will be made to issue the permit in accordance with our current procedures. As we are working remotely and City Hall is closed to the public, our processes have changed and are being updated continuously.

 Permit Expiration

 All building permits that expired during the March 31st, 2020 shelter in place order will automatically be extended 180 days from the date the shelter in place restrictions have been lifted. The new expiration date is October 31st, 2020. If you have experienced delays in making progress on your project due to the COVID-19 shelter in place orders and may need an extension of your permit expiration date, contact the Building Official at (510) 420-3060 or e-mail cgriffin@piedmont.ca.gov.  Accommodations for these extraordinary times may be made on a case by case basis.
